This 9th century temple was erected by samurai commander Sakanoue-no-Tamuramaro out of thanks to Bishamon, god of victories, for Sakanoue’s successful campaign against the indigenous Emishi people of Tohoku. Besides the striking Hall of Bishamon, be sure not to miss theenormous Buddha relief carved into the cliff face. The protective charms sold at this temple are also said to be especially powerful.
